'Colour has taken hold of me; no longer do I have to chase after
it. Colour and I are one. I am a painter.'
Paul Klee, Tunisia, April 1914.
Explore the work of one of the great masters of modern art. Paul
Klee: The Nature of Creation, curated by Berlin-based art historian
Robert Kudielka and artist Bridget Riley, brings together a sharp
historical perspective and an artist's eye. It examines, for the first
time, Klee's work from the perspective of his own thinking and his role
in the development of 20th century art. Around 100 of Klee's most
important works from private and public collections worldwide, many
never before seen in the UK, are presented in a single showing at the
Hayward Gallery.
Paul Klee has influenced many artists, architects, writers and
composers, through his writing, as well as his paintings and graphic
work. The Hayward Gallery has a series of talks and events providing
representatives from these different forms with the opportunity to
examine the power of Paul Klee's work.
One event not to miss is the Curators in Conversation on 23
January, 6.30pm (free with an exhibition ticket for the day) in the
galleries. Artist Bridget Riley and Art Historian Robert Kudielka
discuss the exhibition and what inspires them about Paul Klee's work.
ALSO SHOWING.
WARTE MAL!
Prostitution After the Velvet Revolution
A Video Installation by Ann-Sofi Sidén
Swedish artist Ann-Sofi Sidén works with hidden worlds. Her
video installation Warte Mal! (Hey Wait!) explores the complexities of
Dubi, a small town on the Czech-German border. Once a flourishing spa
town, it now exists almost solely for the purposes of prostitution.
Warte Mal! mixes filmed interviews with prostitutes, pimps and police
and material from the artist's diaries. This powerful and
thought-provoking work is presented in a large-scale installation which
opens at the Hayward Gallery on 17 January.
Please note that the Ann-Sofi Sidén exhibition includes video
interviews with prostitutes talking frankly about the experiences.
Visitors with children should exercise their discretion.
