The Stephen Cohen Gallery is pleased to announce a new exhibition of photographs by Brian Finke. Flight Attendants will be the artist’s second exhibition with the gallery. As with his previous work 2-4-6-8: American Cheerleaders and Football Players, Finke gives us a calculated and compelling study of one of the most fascinating cultural niche’s ever to be examined through a camera lens. An opening reception for the artist sponsored by Anthem Magazine will be held on Thursday, June 12, from 7-9pm.
Embedded on fifteen plus airlines, Finke illustrates the gamut of the air travel experience from Hooters-Air to the renowned Icelandair. With a body of work spanning two years, Finke manages to reveal some stunning insights into the airline travel industry and challenges our initial notions of those smiling employees flying those friendly skies at 40,000 feet. The photographs capture the intrigue, allure and peculiarity of those who volunteer themselves to the always-accommodating transient lifestyle.
Although Flight Attendants does in fact highlight the occupation and lifestyle of the airline attendants, it also implies certain lingering questions about social groupings, camaraderie, and the unseen adhesive that binds people to their respective subgroupings. A self-defined “documentary photographer,” Finke not only takes photographs, he generates a visual survey that dissects human behavior.
A graduate of the School of Visual Arts in New York City in 1998 with a BFA in photography, Finke’s work has been received with tremendous success. His work can be found in museum collections both domestic and international and, his first monograph was chosen as one of the best photography books of 2004 by the International Center for Photography’s annual Infinity award. Finke has also won the New York Foundation for the Arts Fellowship, an award famous for facilitating important artists’ continual relationship with the creative process.
