Klaus vom Bruch ranks among the pioneers of media and video art. Many of the motifs in his work, which encompasses videos, loops, installations, sound objects, photo pieces and video sculptures, are taken from his personal archive of clips from feature films and documentaries.
He alters, combines and composes this material to create compelling sequences of images with no narrative dimension. Like his early video tapes, his latest photo pieces are montages of material excerpted from films. Various pictorial models generate a meta-level in these collages of stills.
Many of the photo montages play ironically with optical illusion and viewers’ mental projections when encountering images for the first time. Ultimately, the goal is more political than aesthetic, since the works address modes of perception in the media age.
