Face to Face

Daros Latinamerica, Zurich

The Daros Collections. Part II

comunicato stampa

Face to Face is the first exhibition to present both Daros Collections in combination. Works in a wide variety of media and from cultures in the West and Latin America have been brought together in thoughtfully selected juxtapositions.
Unexpected and exciting points of contact as well as provocative art historical contrasts will unsettle ingrained Eurocentric thinking. However, the emphasis is on what these works share rather than what divides them. This thought-provoking presentation from the rich holdings of the two Daros Collections will draw attention to the specific qualities and similarities of both collections and will enhance the appreciation of their respective cultural histories.

Face to Face, Part 2, will present works by the following artists:
Waltercio Caldas, Luis Camnitzer, Carlos Cruz-Diez, Antonio Dias, Dan Flavin, Ellsworth Kelly, Guillermo Kuitca, Sol LeWitt, Vik Muniz, Barnett Newman, Hélio Oiticica, Nelson Ramos, Robert Ryman, Mira Schendel, Richard Serra, Jesús Rafael Soto, Cy Twombly

Face to Face takes viewers on a journey through the history of art in the second half of the 20th century, and across countries and continents. Icons of the art world meet up with artists still largely unknown in Europe. Playful sequences of works grouped by different themes form a network of unexpected surprises, while the ever-changing constellations of the works themselves set the pace and point the way.

The Daros Collection, acquired in the 1980s and 1990s, consists of some 300 works created over the past fifty years by thirty artists from the USA and Europe.

The Daros-Latinamerica Collection was established in 2000. It contains approxima-tely 1000 works by 100 artists from Latin America, also from the past five decades.

The Daros-Latinamerica Collection of contemporary Latin American art touches ground in Zürich, Switzerland, and in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. In Zürich, the Daros Exhibitions space regularly presents shows from the collection, accompanied by Daros Art Education programmes and other related events. In Rio de Janeiro, a new art centre is being established, the Casa Daros. The centre is to open doors with a wide-ranging programme in the year 2008.
