Natural Born Lovers
Young couples making out, women with birds, and hedonistic groupings are
the subjects of "Natural Born Lovers," an exhibition of recent ink drawings
by Tracy Nakayama. For this exhibition--her third solo show in 14
months--Ms. Nakayama, who was born in Honolulu and is based in New York,
has created a body of works reflecting a balance of what is "dirty" and
cute, tender and careless, and naive and sophisticated.
Ms. Nakayama creates, she says, "art that turns me on....The work is meant
to be seen as neither retro nor kitschy. It is sincere and humble."
Tema Celeste, for its November/December 2001 issue, commissioned
Ms. Nakayama to compose an essay, "Self-portrait." Her project, "Art For
the Practicing Heterosexual," was published in the Spring/Summer 2000 issue
of zingmagazine. Ms. Nakayama's work has been exhibited in New York,
Frankfurt, San Francisco, and Toronto, and it will be featured in "Face
Values," a group exhibition at White Columns, New York, in February/March
2002. Ms. Nakayama's work is included in private collections in New York,
elsewhere in North America, and in Germany.
"Natural Born Lovers" is Tracy Nakayama's second solo exhibition at Modern
Culture At The Gershwin Hotel.
