The Nordic Art Fair. The event hosts 78 leading galleries from Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Finland, The Faeroe Islands, Iceland and Greenland. It focus on Contemporary and Modern art and is a unique meeting place in the heart of the Nordic art scene. It is attanded anually by art collectors, art dealers, artists, curators, art critics and art lovers from all over Europe.
Each year Art Copenhagen attracts more than 12,000 art buyers, artists, curators and
art enthusiasts, who come to experience works from some of the leading Nordic art
galleries. The time is upon us again, and Art Copenhagen is ready to display works by
600 artists when the doors open Friday, September 19 at 1 PM.
Art Copenhagen has seen nothing but progress in the five years it has spent updating and
developing its profile. Danish and Nordic galleries have supported the project, and art
collectors from the Nordic countries and the rest of Europe have descended on the fair. These
have been good times for art, and the result has been a spike in interest and financial reward
for artists as well as for galleries. The general economic decline of the past year might have
presaged an imminent downturn, but Art Copenhagen has seen a steady rise in interest, and
the galleries have shown great enthusiasm for experimentation, both in their exhibition booths
and in the art they represent.
“Forum Copenhagen and the fair committee continually strive to develop the fair, making it
larger and more distinctive. The balcony really came alive in 2007, and this year a third of the
galleries will be situated there, along with our other collaborators from the art world”, says
Lisbeth Kystgaard Olsen, Project Manager at Art Copenhagen. Each day artists and art
experts will introduce and discuss current trends on the balcony stage, among them Lilibeth
Cuenca Rasmussen, Peter Callesen, Helle Mardahl, Karsten Orth, U-turn — The Quadrennial
for Contemporary Art and the photography magazine FILTER. The stage is also the point of
departure for daily guided tours of the fair offered by art historians, and this year’s added
bonus is the unveiling of a 29-meter-long work by the artist HuskMitNavn, specifically
created for the space.
Each year Art Copenhagen has many collaborators beyond the galleries. This year we are
proud to present the magazines Wonderland, MagasinetKunst, and Kunstavisen; the exhibit
halls Gl. Strand, Stiftelsen Wanås Utställninger as well as U-turn — The Quadrennial for
Contemporary Art, MTAB Danmark A/S, Konstfrämjandet Skåne, Imperfect Articles and the
AIDS Foundation. Imperfect Articles from the United States sells t-shirts with prints created
by international street artists. The AIDS Foundation sells its beautiful 98 x 138 cm art
calendar, and the proceeds go to help people with HIV and AIDS.
This year’s opening speech will be given by the director of AroS, Jens Erik Sørensen, on
Friday, September 19, 2008 at 2.15 PM.
Lilibeth Cuenca Rasmussen will present her performance piece “Miss United” on the balcony
stage at 7 PM. At 8 PM she will be interviewed by curator Kristina Valborg Valberg.
Seventy-eight galleries from Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Finland, The Faroe Islands, Iceland and
Greenland participate in ART Copenhagen —The Nordic Art Fair 2008.
Jens Erik Sørensen, director of the art museum ARoS, and the internationally
recognized performance artist Lilibeth Cuenca Rasmussen top the programme
as Art Copenhagen starts three days of art, lectures, events and discussions.
Don’t miss Lilibeth Cuenca Rasmussen as she performs her musical art tragedy about
the complex character Miss United. Cuenca Rasmussen presents Mis United’s volatile
existence in a raw and seductive fashion through her own songs, which range from
punk to rock and hip-hop. Lilibeth Cuenca Rasmussen’s performance and the
subsequent interview take place on the stage on Friday September 19 at 19:00.
Among Saturday’s offerings is a meeting with the artist Peter Callesen, who tells
about his nuanced and dramatic paper cuts. Later in the day the businessman and
designer Mads Nørgaard, the artist Helle Mardahl and the designer Sara Sachs engage
in a discussion on how art influences fashion and vice versa. Helle and Sara both
graduated as fashion designers from the prestigious Central Saint Martins College of
Art and Design in London, but whereas Helle consciously uses her fashion
background in her work as an artist, Sara has teamed with artist Tal R and
photographer Noam Griegst to create the clothing company MoonSpoon Saloon on
artistic premises. Mads Nørgaard has close ties to the art scene and often employs an
artistic approach when presenting his designs, using film instead of fashion shows or
releasing single vinyl records. He has previously collaborated with Tal R on a line of
knitted sweaters featuring the artist’s unique colours and patterns.
On Sunday, the discussion focuses on the influence art and artist can exert on public
spaces and urban development. Karsten Orth, director of the Danish National Gallery,
presents his vision for the future of the museum. On Saturday and Sunday visitors can
witness Søren Dahlgaard, a.k.a. The Dough Warrior, in a Dough Portrait session, in
which everyone is welcome to participate and either become part of the Dough
Portrait series or order their very own Dough Portrait. This event takes place at the
exhibition booth of Stalke Gallery on Saturday and on the balcony stage on Sunday at
13:00.
Don’t forget to visit the booth of the magazine Wonderland, where the art collective
Ultra Grøn has transformed the booth into an installation that takes the visitor into the
countryside, through green forests and past quaint little village market stalls. Ultra
Grøn wishes to create a space where everyone can breathe freely, where the art is not
for sale but represents an alternative way to experience the world and be a consumer.
The project is a benefit for Amnesty International.
