comunicato stampa

'We don’t have art movements anymore. We have market movements.’ – Walter Robinson.

Para/Site Art Space is proud to present ‘CASH IN’, a collaborative project with celebrated artist Chen Shao Xiong (born in Shantou, Guangdong, 1962), to kick off the second edition of October Contemporary this year. The project features a proposal to captialise the founding of Bank of Chinese Contemporary Art (BOCCA) open for offers from interested parties.

One of the four founding members of the ‘Big Tail Elephant” group in Guangdong, and his oeuvre utilizes a variety of media and techniques, including, video, installations, photography and ink painting. Chen’s diverse practice reacts to the changes and disparities that emerge from the hyper development within the country while revealing a deep interest in ever-changing urban landscape in China and in global politics. For the his first solo-presentation in Hong Kong, Chen uses ‘CASH IN’ as an opportunity to reflect on his position as a Chinese Contemporary Artist nowadays as well as a critical response to the fervent activity in the Chinese Art Market.

Para/Site Art Space will transform its space into an information center for the founding of BOCCA, where the proposal will be presented together with logos and various publicity materials. Interested investors are welcome to meet and discuss with the bank organizers Chen Shao Xiong and Christina Li for more information regarding our banking goals, service pledges and explore your investment opportunities in such a unique and innovative business proposition .

Using the proposal of the bank as the starting point of this ongoing project, ‘CASH IN’ outlines and addresses topics that are pertinent to the Chinese Art Market, creating an analysis in relation to artistic value, power, money, investment, cultural production and consumption. Chen Shao Xiong’s imaginative yet serious evocation of the art market presents his contradictory relationship with the speculative Chinese Contemporary art market and inspire audiences to reflect on the force of the Market in the face of the recent financial tsunami.

CASH IN is presented by Para/Site Art Space and is part of the programme of October Contemporary.
