Since 1965, the Weatherspoon’s “Art on Paper” exhibition has charted a history of art through the rubric of one-of-a-kind works on paper (excluding editioned prints and photographs). Today, artists working on paper enjoy increased attention by contemporary curators and collectors, and are included in major art biennials and museum exhibitions worldwide. Now in its fortieth year, the steadfast commitment of xpdex (formerly the Dillard Paper Company) has allowed the Weatherspoon to acquire works from each and every “Art on Paper” exhibition, resulting in the formation and tremendous growth of the Dillard Collection of Art on Paper, which today numbers close to 550 objects. Acquisitions have included work by some of art’s seminal practitioners, including Louise Bourgeois, Brice Marden, Joan Mitchell, Robert Smithson, Frank Stella and Eva Hesse. Support for the exhibition and catalogue is generously provided by the F.M. Kirby Foundation, with additional support from the Royal Netherlands Embassy, New York.

The exhibition opens with a Preview Party and Curator’s Walk-Through on Saturday, October 18. Preview Party tickets are $75 for members, $100 non-members. Call 336.334.5770 for more information and to purchase tickets. Collectors won't want to miss the silent auction of a new work by exhibitor Jiha Moon, or the raffle opportunity to win a beautiful dinner prepared by celebrated Triad chef Reto Biaggi, complemented with wines from Zeto and flowers arranged by Randy McManus Designs—a $500 value. For raffle tickets ($25 each or $60 for 3), call (336) 334-5770.

A Guest Lecture by Connie Butler, Robert Lehman Foundation Chief Curator of Drawings at the Museum of Modern Art, New York will occur at 2 pm, Sunday, October 19. The lecture is free and open to the public.

A tour of the exhibition will be held at 12 pm, Tuesday, December 9, as part of the Weatherspoon’s Noon at the 'Spoon series.

The "Art on Paper 2008" catalogue, beautifully designed by Donna Gibbs, includes full-color images, an exhibition checklist, director’s foreword and curator’s statement.
