Pierre Bismuth

Christine Konig Galerie, Wien

Bismuth employs artistic practice as a tool for examining our perception of reality as well as our relation to culture and it's productions. The underlying aim of his works is always the same - to destabilize pre-established codes of perception and to push the viewer to become critical and incredulous even when presented with cultural objects whose meaning appears self-evident. In the third room: Red Bucket Films.

comunicato stampa

Pierre Bismuth employs artistic practice as a tool for examining our perception of reality as well as our relation to culture and it´s productions. The underlying aim of his works is always the same – to destabilize pre-established codes of perception and to push the viewer to become critical and incredulous even when presented with cultural objects whose meaning appears self-evident.

Pierre Bismuth creates unexpected shifts in the everyday meaning of things in order to provoke a change in perceptual habits, thus opening the space for an understanding of the world beyond its constructed meaning. The immediate accessibility of the materials employed by the artist proves to be a kind of decoy or lure, which eventually leads the spectator to distance him or herself from the usual network of significations and implications in which they are embedded. In this sense Pierre Bismuth never tries to add new meanings to the objects that he manipulates, but aims simply to neutralize their initial meaning and thereby delay the act of understanding. His art is above all one of suspension.

In his second solo show at Christine Koenig Gallery he again deals with/attacks productions from the Disney studios AND he drives forward the famous work by Robert Rauschenberg from the early 50ies - the erasure of DeKoonings drawing of a nude - to an unexpected level…

Third Room: Red Bucket Films buttons

Red Bucket Films was born out of the curiosity and optimism that spilled when Josh and Benny Safdie met Alex Kalman in highschool. The three split up for college and found more friends - Sam Lisenco, Brett Jutkiewicz, Lola Sinreich, Zachary Treitz, and other souls who sometimes make up our motley crew of thinkers and doers. We push each others visions around. Red Bucket Films believes in poetic stumbles on those
streets that we walk.

Buttons: short movies, made spontaneously, sometimes unknowingly, on pocket-sized cameras. They are like extra buttons at the bottom of the inseam of every shirt. A selection of buttons were played at Dali and Bunuel MoMA-Rooftop Film Screening NY, summer 2008.
