Falke auf schilkrote
The members of the Kunstgesellschaft have cast their Picture Ballot 2008: their choice is not a Madonna in a golden dress, but a coloured bird, whose uniqueness surely helped it to victory. We are most familiar with Mediaeval sculpture in its sacred forms – this larger-than-life, authenticlooking falcon standing on a turtle, on the other hand, is an enigmatic exception. A ‘provisional, cursory appraisal’ dates its birth to the period around 1440, in northern Italy. The figure was undergoing a scientific examination in advance of the exhibition, which will in turn include those findings in a comprehensive presentation of the sculpture in its context in the history of art and culture.
