Viviane Sassen
Born 1972, Amsterdam (NL) / Works in NL
Viviane Sassen combines freelance assignments as a fashion photographer with her own artistic work. She often works in Africa, investigating her own image of that continent. In 2007 she was awarded the prestigious biennial Dutch State award for artists, the Prix de Rome. She regularly collaborates with Martine Stig, with whom she was commissioned by ArtAids to make the Cover photos.
Martine Stig
Born 1972, Nijmegen (NL) / Works in NL
In her photographs, Martine Stig explores the medium of photography itself. Stig always works in series, each of which makes the viewer think about photography in a different way. She plays with our expectations, which are based on our previous experiences and on the context in which the images are presented. Han Nefkens’ H+F Collection holds two series of her works. Martine Stig participated in H+F Collection’s exhibitions Whisper Not! (2006), Choix d’Artistes (2007), Parts and the Whole (2007-08) and So Close/So Far Away (2007-08). Stig also works on assignment, often collaborating with Viviane Sassen, with whom she was commissioned by ArtAids to make the Cover photos.
A book entitled Cover - Viviane Sassen and Martine Stig is being published by Veenman Publishers in November 2008. It contains all the Cover photographs and an introductory text by Catherine Somzé (see below). The graphic design is by Thomas Buxó.

ArtAids fights AIDS, with the substantive and monetary power of art as its most important weapons. ArtAids invites leading artists to produce work that is inspired by AIDS and related problems. These works of art are used not only to raise the public’s consciousness and to encourage their involvement, but also to generate funds for supporting projects throughout the world that are aimed at preventing and fighting AIDS.
ArtAids was set up by the Dutch writer and art collector Han Nefkens. When Nefkens learned that he was infected with HIV in 1987, this brought about a radical change in his life. He came to realize that he was living in injury time; each moment is important to him. Han Nefkens sees the intensity of that experience reflected in the world of art. For this reason he has decided to use art to increase involvement in the AIDS problem so that real contributions can be made to creating a better existence for people living with HIV.
