Art Miami 2008, the City’s prestigious, long-running contemporary art fair, takes place December 3-7th, proudly showcasing a wide variety of art from more than 100 leading national and international contemporary art galleries and prominent institutions.

In its 19th edition, Art Miami has moved to a new location inside the emerging Midtown Miami Arts District, adjacent to the Miami Design District and Wynwood Arts District. The Fair is annually applauded for the depth and quality of its art, including a selection of special exhibitions and curatorial projects, outdoor sculptures and video installations -- all to appear within a new 100,000+-square-foot pavilion. European, Asian, American and Latin American galleries and institutions will also contribute unique curated exhibitions in the BlackRock Art Video | New Media Lounge and through additional art projects. BlackRock, the nation’s largest asset manager, is the Fair’s main sponsor and official host of the VIP lounge.

The venue additionally boasts a restaurant offering delectable cuisine and beverages by Touch Catering. Ample parking will be provided through the use of a new four-story parking garage with 1,000 spots, located directly across the street from the pavilion. Convenient valet parking and shuttle bus service to the Miami Beach Convention Center available.

Through the success of years past and heightened interest in 2008, Art Miami continues to expand its reputation, attracting an ever-broader collector base and media attention worldwide. It is the “can’t-miss” event for all serious art collectors, art enthusiasts, curators and museum professionals – a fair that offers the opportunity to acquire some of the finest 20th and 21st century art and provides a closer look at some of the most distinct works at the forefront of the international contemporary art movement.

BlackRock Art Video | New Media Lounge

Art Miami 2008 will introduce for the first time in the Fair’s 19-year history an Art Video-New Media Lounge, curated by Asher Remy Toledo and hosted by Art Miami’s main sponsor, BlackRock, the nation’s largest asset manager. The 2,500-square-foot media lounge will be one of the largest of any of the Miami art fairs and will present works from six, major international art institutions.

Using new technologies for critical and experimental purposes, new media art emerged at the end of the 20th century. This new art form is concerned with the cultural, political and aesthetic possibilities. The internet, advances in information technology and the familiarity of computers and video to a new generation of artists were the impetus for the current global, international new media movement.

Participating institutions in the BlackRock Art Video | New Media Lounge are:

The Cisneros Fontanals Art Foundation (CIFO), United States – Movement as Meditations on Modernity presents works by four artists who offer different approaches to ‘movement’ as an inherent aspect of technology and as a meditation on modernity and modern art and its many traditions. Alexander Apóstol’s (Venezuela), video Moderno Salvaje (2005) explores the paradoxical nature of modernism in Venezuela, where the dream of a modern and progressive urban metropolis has developed hand in hand with its failure in the coexistence of shantytowns, poverty, chaos and corruption. Amilcar Packer (Brazil) subverts the use of objects, such as furniture and clothes, and the role and place of the body in domestic and institutional space in his performance based work Video #11 (2006). This work defies geometry as neutral and non narrative, a transgression initiated by neo-concrete artists in Brazil and taken to new dimensions by artists such as Helio Oiticica and Lygia Clark. Magdalena Fernández (Venezuela) brings the modernist tradition of abstract geometry and kinetic art to a new stage. Her fiber optic installation 2em006 (2006) and her videos from the Mobile Paintings Series (2006) are representative of her complex and sophisticated exploration of the sculptural possibilities of basic geometric forms, light and movement. Ícaro Zorbar’s (Colombia) work deals with the fragility and complexity involved in human relationships, often employing the use of popular love songs and poetry coupled with low-tech objects that produce situations reflecting this fragility.

The Foundation for Art and Creative Technology (FACT), United Kingdom – Fireworks, a high definition video by Nick Crowe and Ian Rawlinson made in 2007. Crowe and Rawlinson have collaborated since 1994. Their new video work focuses on the complexities of faith and the transformative potential of fire and light. Fireworks examines cultural conventions, tensions and misunderstandings.

The Palazzo Delle Arti (PAN) Italy – Deadly Storms, Bjorn Melhus 2008 three-channel video installation is based on appropriated audio footage from the Fox News Network. Three identical talking heads on three vertical screens repeat phrases and statements of alert and threat. The repetitive elements are set to a rhythm and exercise a hypnotic power over the viewer.

The Center for Contemporary Art (CCA) Israel– Videos by artist Sigalit Landau explore the creative process in Tel Aviv. Dancing for Maya (2005) – Narrowly separated monitors reveal the Tel Aviv seashore with waves lapping against the sand. Two women draw serpentine, wave-like marks on the beach; their movements create a tension, a transformation of language and density. Meaning is doubled, as each wave drawn is half the symbol of infinity. Salame (2008) – Sigalit Landau leans out a window and paints a black mark on the wall of a building with a roller. The mark becomes bigger as the video progresses. As the painting continues, the black mark becomes a sundial. The repetition becomes hypnotic and the details of the scene are etched into the mind of the viewer to create a lasting memory of the place.

IBERIA CENTER FOR CONTEMPORARY ART, China – Mist, a 2008 video animation by Zhang Xiaotao. The artist uses the microscopic animal world to explore the angst and restlessness caused by the transformation of contemporary China. The country’s socialist heritage – what remains and what has died – and the Chinese identity in the context of globalization are examined.

ULLENS CENTER FOR CONTEMPORARY ART, China - Long March! Restart – Feng Mengbo’s video game uses Chairman Mao’s famous Long March as a theme. The artist’s goal is to use the computer and digital technology to breakaway from accepted norms of the media art genre and to see if the viewer can complete the Long March sitting on a chair.
