Two exhibitions

Bass Museum of Art, Miami Beach

"Russian Dreams..." presents a selection of cutting-edge works by contemporary artists from Russia that explores Russian art's evolution from the pre-Glasnost era to the present day. The exhibition juxtaposes the work of AES+F Group, Alexander Ponomarev, Vladimir Dubossarsky and Alexander Vinogradov, Dmitri Gutov, Alexei Kostroma, and the new generation of young artists - Julia Milner, Rostan Tavasiev, Haim Sokol, and MishMash Project. Trained as an architect, Mexican artist Pedro Reyes explores the ways in which a space can be created to combine utopian ideas as well as function. 47 Sculptures, drawings, models, props, and video footage reveal the progression of the artist's conceptual strategies that precede the final product. Organized by Silvia Karman Cubina.

Russian Dreams...
4 December - 8 February, 2009

Curated by Olga Sviblova, Director of the Multimedia Art Museum, Moscow

Russian Dreams… presents a selection of cutting-edge works by contemporary artists from Russia that explores Russian art's evolution from the pre-Glasnost era to the present day. The exhibition juxtaposes the work of modern Russian artists such as AES+F Group, Alexander Ponomarev, Vladimir Dubossarsky and Alexander Vinogradov, Dmitri Gutov, Alexei Kostroma, and the new generation of young artists – Julia Milner, Rostan Tavasiev, Haim Sokol, and MishMash Project. The first group of artists came to prominence in the 1980-90s, and the latter group of artists– currently between 20 and 30 years old – developed their work in a new, post-Perestroika Russia when government bans on personal expression were lifted, changing the scope of established artists' work.

Russian Dreams… is a collaboration between the Bass Museum of Art and the Multimedia Art Museum, Moscow.

Pedro Reyes: 47 Undertakings
4 December – 1 March, 2009

Organized by Silvia Karman Cubina, Executive Director, Bass Museum of Art

Trained as an architect, Mexican artist Pedro Reyes explores the ways in which a space can be created to combine utopian ideas as well as function. 47 Sculptures, drawings, models, props, and video footage reveal the progression of the artist's conceptual strategies that precede the final product. The works included in this exhibition serve as a non-hierarchical collection of fragments, illustrating ideas related to social psychology, economy, structural engineering, and architecture. This exhibition abruptly halts the process of viewing art, and substitutes it with participation into the evolution of the artist's work.

Reyes' work has been exhibited at institutions throughout the world, including the South London Gallery; Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago; the Aspen Art Museum, Colorado; the Reina Sofia, Madrid; Yvon Lambert Gallery, New York; the Jumex Collection, Mexico City; P.S.1 Contemporary Art Center, New York; Kunstwerke, Berlin; Museo-estudio Luis Barragan, Mexico City; the Kunsthalle Wien, Vienna; Witte de With, Rotterdam; the Seattle Art Museum, Washington; and the Carpenter Center for Visual Arts at Harvard University, Cambridge, USA.
