comunicato stampa

To mark the 125th anniversary of the Vereniging Rembrandt (Rembrandt Association), the Groninger Museum will exhibit nearly all the objects it has purchased over the years, with the support of the association.

The Groninger Museum first sought out its patronage in the late nineteenth century. A portrait painted by the seventeenth century Groninger artist Hermannus Collenius was purchased in 1892. Until long after the Second World War most of the Museum’s purchases dealt with the art history of Groningen. Besides paintings by Groninger masters, these also consisted of a number of noteworthy pieces of seventeenth and eighteenth century silver. Furthermore, the Asiatica collection was enriched with porcelain, lacquer work, and tapestries. The first modern art the Museum began to collect with the support of the Vereniging Rembrandt was the expressionist art of the Groninger artists’ association De Ploeg.

During and after the directorate of Frans Haks (1978-1995) international contemporary art was also purchased with the support of the Vereniging Rembrandt. This included a mirror by Jeff Koons, silver tea sets by Alessi, a large tapestry by Robert Kushner, and drawings by Andy Warhol. The Groninger Museum presents, courtesy of the Vereniging Rembrandt, a splendid selection from the Groninger Museum collection.
