New Wave of Turner, New School Pollock
Western Project is proud to present the fourth solo exhibition by Sush
Machida Gaikotsu. As a graduate of the prestigious UNLV art program in
2002, the artist continues to live and work in Las Vegas. Heavily
influenced by the Edo period in Japanese art, and particularly Hokusai's
famous woodcut print "Great Wave off Kanagawa", Machida has created his
most lyrical and complex body of work to date. The series is based on
the ocean - rolling and turbulent movement - 4recalling Leonardo Da
Vinci's late wave drawings and Turner's abstract stormy sea paintings.
The historic fascination with the ocean is primal, yet Machida layers
the familiar imagery with a Pop sensibility; as if Lichtenstein's
'Brushstroke' works came to life or Pollock's expressive markings
evolved into minimal graphic compositions. Machida turns the sense of
looming maelstrom into formal compositions. The paintings are made of
colorful swirling lines and immaculately finished surfaces; evoking the
Finish Fetish works of the 1960's. While the works of the Pop era
commented on politics and social issues, Machida addresses nature and
culture and ultimately, a larger sense of order.
Sush Machida Gaikotsu received his MFA from the University of Las Vegas.
His work is in the collection of the Frederick R. Weisman Art
Foundation, the Portland Art Museum, the Nora Eccles Harrison Museum of
Art, the Phoenix Art Museum and the Las Vegas Art Museum. He has
exhibited in Tokyo, San Francisco, Los Angeles, New Orleans, Santa Fe
and was most recently featured in the museum show, Las Vegas Diaspora.
His work has been reviewed in Flash Art, Art Issues, Art in America,
ArtForum, and the Los Angeles Times, among others.
