The gallery is showing new work by the German artist Andreas Schulze from
March 19th until May 4th, 2002. This is his first solo show in Austria.

on exhibit.
Schulze's work is unique in German painting of the past 30 years. When the
neuen Wilden postulated the rebirth of painting at the beginning of the
1980s, Andreas Schultze also began to exhibit his first large-format pieces
in this context. But as close as his personal friendships to the members of
the "Mülheimer Freiheit" and the "Berliner Wilden" were, Schulze's painting
always stood apart from the general trends. As with Rene Daniels in
Amsterdam, Schulze's painting was highly regarded by his artist colleagues,
however both the form and content of his work remained unclassifiable.
Schulze starts out from the realistic. Common clichés are isolated, turned
around and moved into new surroundings. Removed from their original defining
situation, these objects lose neither their reference to reality nor their
legibility, but this alienation deprives the objects of their intrinsic
value and develops them into complex thought-provoking pieces.
Andreas Schulze was born in 1955 in Hannover.
He studied at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf from 1978 to 1983.
The artist works and lives in Cologne.
