Zoologics

Ballhaus Ost, Berlin

For this exhibition the artists have taken Zoo as a starting point, a plot device or as a field for their own artistic investigation. They transform Zoo according to their own personal logic: as a subject, a concept, as a material. In media as diverse as 'classical' sculpture, painting, photography, video and installation each artist focuses on a different aspect of Zoo.

comunicato stampa

A ZOO is a strange space. It is both real and material but it is also a concept, a social construction or even a political item. Traditionally the ZOO is understood not only as a place where living animals are exhibited in captivity but also as a resort for the preservation of nature, for education, research and recreation.

For this exhibition the artists have taken ZOO as a starting point, a plot device or as a field for their own artistic investigation. They transform ZOO according to their own personal logic: as a subject, a concept, as a material.
In media as diverse as “classical“ sculpture, painting, photography, video and installation each artist focuses on a different aspect of ZOO. Some have chosen to approach the subject from the cover of childhood, some investigate the zoo of daily life and others highlight absurd tendencies to order, categorise, exclude, include. Melancholic bears are juxtaposed with spacious maps; sensual objects sit next to monsters.

Although at first sight a playful tone may prevail, this exhibition assembles sensitive reflections on the condition of looking and observing, it shows silent lamentations on the loss of liberty, suggests simple propositions on questions of alterity. And in the end this clash of concepts and materials probes into one of the main issues relating to ZOO: questioning the natural and the artificial, nostalgia and kitsch. Leading on to wonder: Where and what is the ZOO actually and what can it be?
This project was developed by students of the department of sculpture at the Kunsthochschule Berlin-Weißensee and it was initiated and accompanied by Yuki Jungesblut, visiting lecturer and Professor Susanne Weirich. ZOOLOGICS is on display at Ballhaus Ost, Berlin from 20th –25th February 2009.
