comunicato stampa

Sebastian + Barquet London is delighted to present Unwearable Jewels, an exhibition of unique works by renowned jewellery designer Solange Azagury-Partridge. The exhibition will feature decorative objects for the home that incorporate precious and semi-precious stones: handmade carpets, tables inlaid with precious gems, bejeweled plaques, and a sparkling chandelier. Unwearable Jewels enjoyed a successful run at Sebastian + Barquet New York from October to December last year, and is accompanied by a velvet-bound catalogue.
For Unwearable Jewels, Solange has translated her jewellery designs into decorative art. Echoing motifs from her COSMIC collection, each wall plaque is conceived as a picture, composed of intricate inlaid stones. The star of the show will be a shimmering chandelier encrusted with 200 carats of diamonds. The only rule Solange has applied to every creation in Unwearable Jewels is to subvert traditional ideas of how precious stones and metals should be used. “Solange is a singular talent. She has brought much needed vitality to the world of jewellery and is now doing the same for design.”

Without any formal training, Solange Azagury-Partridge developed her talent for design and opened her first shop in Westbourne Grove in 1995. The store, conceived as an oversized jewellery box, immediately attracted an eclectic international client base. A stint as creative director at Boucheron followed, from 2001 to 2004, after which Solange decided to concentrate on her own designs and ideas. In October 2005, she moved her shop to larger premises.

Solange’s designs became permanent fixtures of the venerated jewellery gallery at the Musée des Arts Décoratifs du Louvre in 2004 and in 2008 became part of the permanent collection of the V&A’s prestigious new jewellery gallery. This month Solange will open her first U.S. boutique in New York, at 809 Madison Avenue.

Sebastian + Barquet was established in New York in 2005 with the intention of providing collectors with access to the finest available examples of 20th century design. With two locations in New York’s Chelsea design district and a further gallery in Bruton Place in London’s Mayfair, Sebastian + Barquet maintains a presence at principal design fairs worldwide. With a focus on masterworks of American and European design of the 1940s -1960s, the gallery is dedicated to presenting well curated, museum-quality exhibitions that celebrate the works of established masters while simultaneously showcasing the work of lesser-known designers. The gallery’s exhibited artists include international designers who have left an indelible mark on the design landscape, such as Jean Prouvé, Le Corbusier, Gio Ponti, George Nakashima and Buckminster Fuller.
Since it opened in October 2008, Sebastian + Barquet London has established itself as a leading gallery for international modernist design. Unwearable Jewels will be the gallery’s third exhibition, and heralds the recent appointment of its new Director, Oscar Humphries.
