Museum Dhondt-Dhaenens MDD, Deurle

Francesco Gennari creates a new installation "Picture This!" in which various leitmotifs that characterize the oeuvre appear together. His use of materials and his choice to resort to a minimal, pure aesthetics, result from a permanent, creative enquiry into meaning and symbolism. Peter Buggenhout makes an installation that provides a context and creates an area of tension. His sculptures are made of intestines of animals, blood, dust and hair, but the artist also uses clay and recycled wood.

Francesco Gennari
Picture This!

The work of the Italian artist Francesco Gennari (b. 1973, Fano, Pesaro) can be viewed as a contemporary answer to the heritage of the Arte Povera. Gennari's use of materials and his choice to resort to a minimal, pure aesthetics, result from a permanent, creative enquiry into meaning and symbolism. The transformation of the known results in a very broad reference frame, yet in first instance it is the fascination with the mystery that charges Gennari's work with an enigmatic force. For the Museum Dhondt-Dhaenens, Gennari creates a new installation in which various leitmotifs that characterize the oeuvre appear together.

Peter Buggenhout

The Belgian artist Peter Buggenhout (b. 1963, Dendermonde, lives and works in Ghent) questions the status of sculpture with sculptures and installations that are made with materials that refer to life and transiency. The sculptures are made of intestines of animals, blood, dust and hair, but the artist also uses clay and recycled wood. Because of their structure and texture, the works transcend the familiar and the recognizable. For his project in the Museum Dhondt-Dhaenens, Buggenhout makes an installation that provides a context and creates an area of tension for several large sculptures.

Wade Guyton

Wade Guyton (b. 1972, Hammond, Indiana, lives and works in New York) is considered along other artists such as Kelley Walker, Seth Price and Josh Smith to belong to a new generation of American artists that added a new dimension to the heritage of abstract modernism and Pop Art. With large Epson printers, Guyton creates monochrome images on canvas. Because he uses a material that is not intended for inkjet printers - canvas is a medium used for oil paintings - imperfections result, as the ink interacts in a strange manner with the texture of the canvas. By passing the canvas several times through the printer, the works are transformed in pitch-black monochromes with scratches, creases, folds and traces of the printer head.

The Museum Dhondt-Dhaenens - the MDD - is situated near the centre of the village of Deurle, near the river Leie. It possesses a rich collection of Flemish artists, which goes back to the late 1920s, when Jules and Irma Dhondt-Dhaenens started to collect art. In 1967 the couple decided to have a new museum built to present their collection to the public. The modernist building, designed by architect Erik Van Biervliet, also had to be a place where a variety of cultural and artistic events could take place.
The original collection comprised works by James Ensor, Gust and Leon De Smet, Valerius De Saedeleer, Constant Permeke, Albert Servaes, Frits Van den Berghe, Gustave van de Woestyne, and other artists. Many contemporary artists have joined the collection in the course of time, such as David Tremlett, Marthe Wéry, Marcel Maeyer, Joëlle Tuerlinckx, Koen Theys and Raoul De Keyser.
For the moment, a major selection of works from the museum collection is presented to the public.
The selection includes works by Constant Permeke, Frits Van den Berghe, Albert Saverys, Valerius De Saedeleer, Gust. De Smetand other artists.
