The 7th exhibit of the Emerging Curators Series, Superlounge will transform GAle GAtes into a film and video lounge. Chairs, sofas, rugs, mattresses, and coffee tables will be strewn about the gallery space. Like watching television at home, this specific viewing environment presents the opportunity to relax and spend time with the art. superlounge grafts Timothy Leary’s come-on into "Tune In, Turn On, Chill Out". Work presented by a large range of international artists including Candice Breitz, Patty Chang, Christoph Draeger, Jim Lambie, Christian Nguyen and Erik Wesselo, exemplifies how the vast influence of media has "produced" an experience that is familiar to all of us around the world. curated by Andréa Salerno and Mari Spirito

superlounge will transform GAle GAtes et al. into a film and video lounge. Chairs, sofas, rugs, mattresses, and coffee
tables will be strewn about the gallery space. Like watching television at home, this specific viewing environment presents
the opportunity to relax and spend time with the art. superlounge grafts Timothy Leary’s come-on into "Tune In, Turn On,
Chill Out".
In the lower gallery Lambie will affix his psychedelic installation of multi-colored
vinyl stripes onto the entire floor, responding directly to the architecture of the
room. In the upper gallery, one will see Breitz’s "Me, Myself and I", based on a
Joan Armatrading song that shows the artist singing in triplicate as she passes
through European landscapes, a projected video of a Wyeth-esque "Christina"
attempting to walk on unstable ground by Chang, and Wesselo’s 16 mm film of
the artist setting his own hair on fire. In a nearby projection Nguyen eats an entire
meal in reverse and in the final installation Draeger and his friends reenact
hold-up scenes from famous movies. This wide range of international artists
exemplifies the influence of a public media on contemporary, private living
experience. Instead of taking the TV into the gallery, superlounge takes the art into
the living room.
Work presented by a large range of international artists including Candice Breitz, Patty Chang, Christoph Draeger, Jim Lambie, Christian Nguyen and Erik Wesselo, exemplifies how the vast influence of
media has "produced" an experience that is familiar to all of us around the world.
By appropriating imitations of themselves or images, objects or music from
popular culture, these six young artists bring life to their own acculturation.
supervideonight will take place on Friday, April 19th from 8pm to Midnight. Six
guest curators have been invited to present 30 min. each of some of their favorite
film and video work. Included are Max Henry (Independent Writer/Curator),
Jeanine Oleson (Artist/Independent Curator), Guy Richards Smit (Artist), Maura Reilly (Independent Curator/Critic), Joel Beck and Christian Viveros-Fauné (Roebling Hall), and Christine Zehner.
