In his fiberglass wall reliefs, Vincent Szarek exploits the flashy,
fetishistic sensuality of custom car bodies, while at the same time
referencing the understatement of minimalism. Szarek has created a
vocabulary of curvaceous forms and saturated, glittering colors that differ
from minimalism in terms of an emphasis on the "custom" as opposed to the
"serial". This customization results from a complex process that involves
precise computer-based design and hands-on fabrication and finishing.
This is Vincent Szarek's second exhibition at Sandra Gering Gallery. In
2001, his work was included in Geometry & Gesture, Galerie Thaddaeus Ropac,
Salzburg, Austria; and Selections from the Altoids Collection, New Museum
of Contemporary Art, New York, among other exhibitions.
