Olga Koumoundouros makes sculpture that looks at American ideas of retreat
into the mythological wilderness and points to a paranoiac impulse within
that desire. Utilizing camping equipment and auto parts, she complicates our
ideas of the cultural landscape and attitudes of what is natural and
unnatural, as evident in American culture.
Rodney McMillian makes paintings that investigate the by-products of
consumer culture- that speak to the life cycle of those products and their
previous owners. His work reconfigures the possibilities and failures
inherent in the pursuit of the American Dream. Through the use of discarded
carpets and other domestic materials, he points to the urban landscape as a
location where myths such as Manifest Destiny fall apart.
