'New York Stories'
Terry Rodgers is an artist fascinated by the sense of dislocation and
isolation that can often occur within individuals thrust into
the social arena.
Through his paintings, the viewer becomes a voyeur of New
York nightlife.
In this show, consisting of ten large
works on canvas, Rodgers captures the interplay of family, friends, and
acquaintances taking place in downtown Manhattan
lofts. The casual theatricality of these scenes is both inviting and
restricting - the subjects appear to want to be seen, however,
we feel a certain intrusive discomfort in watching.
According to writer Jim Zimmerman:
There are mysteries lurking in each canvas, mysteries of mood, motive, and
relation. Above all, you come up against the
individual's tentative quest for identity, purpose, commitment, and
authenticity in a world founded on the ideology of
uncertainty.
The show adds up to an electrifying insight into the dissonance of
collective material discomfort. We do not want to be in this
picture, even as we do not wish to miss an opportunity like this.
The look of Rodgers' work is cinematic and illustrative, and displays a
mastery of space, form, and light, while the complex
compositions lead us from one scenario to the next. As our eyes are filled
with complexities of interpersonal and architectural
relationships, we are simultaneously presented with a sense of emptiness
within the subjects.
