mullerdechiara Berlin is pleased to announce the opening of 10 Seconds 2
Love,' running from April 11th until May 4th, 2002, with preview evening on
Wednesday, April 10th, at 7pm. Our first group show in the new space on
Rosa-Luxemburg-Platz, '10 Seconds 2 Love' contains the work of artists Luis
Gispert, Kristin Baker and Jeffrey Reed. Although each of them studied together
at Yale, their experiences - and the work which follows -
differ vastly.
Luis Gispert was born in 1972 in Jersey City (NJ) to Cuban parents but grew
up in the suburbs of Miami, and recently showed in the highly prestigious
Whitney Biennial in New York. He works with many different media, chiefly
photography, film, and sculpture. Highly informed by the American hip-hop
culture of his social surroundings, and by the Baroque Catholic-kitsch of
the Cuban community, his work blurs the lines of trash and highbrow.
Kristin Baker is the youngest of the three, born in 1975 in suburban
Connecticut. Much of her work consists of acrylic paint on PVC, and like
the artificial, manmade nature of her medium, the subject matter is
hyperreality, speed, and the (re)construction of spatial-memory. This is
her first show outside of the United States.
Jeffrey Reed, born in 1974 in Houston, Texas, explores coming-of-age
influenced by beer, fast cars, and heavy metal music. The aesthetics of
experience and a nostalgia for the naïveté of youth are embodied by his
sculptures, temples made of empty beer cans and liquor bottles, drum sets,
and car parts. Mr. Reed has shown previously in Italy and New York, as well as Berlin.
