comunicato stampa

The 2009 Beijing International Conference on Art Theory and Criticism is the first symposium of the China Contemporary Art Forum (CCAF). The conference will gather important Chinese and Western scholars to discuss issues of Chinese contemporary art pertaining to critical discourse; this is first conference of its kind. CCAF is a cooperative productionbetween The Research House for Asian Art (a not-for-profit organization registered in Illinois and located in Chicago) and China Contemporary Art Foundation (Hong Kong based).

Our joint statement:

We—the two organizers of this conference, Qigu Jiang and James Elkins—have decided to write separate introductions to the conference. On this site you will find Jiang’s statement and Elkins’s statement, both in English and Chinese. There are two reasons for this:

1. Even though we share many ideas, we also diverge on a number of points, and we want to represent that difference. Our two statements are also aimed at different—but overlapping—sets of readers and participants.

2. Part of the question of this conference is the problem of translation, so we have decided not to gloss over the issue by presenting one joint statement. This way we have two statements, in two languages, for a total of four framing statements.

The organizers

Qigu Jiang is an artist. He pioneered the “Eighty Five Chinese Contemporary Art Movement”in Shanghai with a multi-media installation show in 1985, and now concentrates on ink andbrush painting. He teaches both studio and art history classes in School of the Art Institute of Chicago.

He has organized 10 international conferences and publications, involving over 300 scholars from over 45 countries. His book, Chinese LandscapePainting as Western Art History, is forthcoming from Hong Kong University Press.
