This show includes photographs taken by Cannon Hersey in Soweto and then painted on by Samson Mnisi, and large abstract paintings, constructions and nude drawings by Samson Mnisi and John Hersey. The Bill Ainslie Gallery, which opened August, 1999, aims to exhibit art work in the spirit of the late painter and educator Bill Ainslie and the vibrant Johannesburg Art Foundation.
The Johannesburg Art foundation, since its conception in 1964, has offered equal opportunities to students regardless of race and/or sex. Bill Ainslie and the foundation's numerous talented teachers have taught and nurtured generations of artists who have reached national and international acclaim. The Art Foundation's classes begin on January, 18th, 2000.
CrossPathCulture, a non-profit organization for the international arts, presented in 1999 in New
York: The Rooftop Short Film Festival, the Framing the Other Film Festival, A Salon within
a Salon release party for path (www.crosspathculture.org), and Second Structure, experimental beats in Brooklyn. In South Africa, CrossPathCulture presented Light, poetry by Andries Oliphant, Mongane Wally Serote and Cannon Hersey and photography by Cannon Hersey in Johannesburg.
By exposing artists and non- artists alike to art created throughout the world, CrossPathCulture
aims to encourage and enable individual and collaborative cultural and artistic efforts.
CrossPathCulture, Ltd. is a non-profit organization dedicated to the creation of events,
workshops and production/exhibition centres that will facilitate international dialogue on art
and culture. In addition, C.P.C. has launched an interactive web site and web publication, Path.
Cannon Hersey, director of CrossPathCulture, has exhibited his photography from China, Mongolia, Nepal, Tibet, Zambia and Zimbabwe for P.E.A.C.E. (promoting equality and community everywhere), the Tibet Fund, the Jacques Marchais Museum of Tibetan Art and Vassar College. Samson Mnisi, a South African painter and sculpture, is currently exhibiting works in the Liberated Voices exhibition at the Museum of African Art in New York. John Hersey, an American artist and sculpture, owned the Gallery Hirondelle, was chairman of the Cast the Sleeping Elephant Fund and currently runs Hirrondelle studios in Millbrook, NY where CrossPathCulture will be holding artist
workshops in May of 2000.
