Cycle Estates-General. The artist has experimented with a number of economic and cultural models ranging from a library to a video rental shop, from a school to an art journal to a cafeteria. For this exhibition he will present several new works in the form of an archive.
'Estates-General' is pleased to present EXHIBITION AS SCHOOL, an exhibition of
recent works by Anton Vidokle. The exhibition will open on Thursday, June 25th and
will stay on view through July 18th, 2009.
Together with a large group of collaborators that includes Julieta Aranda, Boris
Groys, Liam Gillick, Martha Rosler, Walid Raad, Nikolaus Hirsch, Brian Kuan Wood,
Natascha Sadr Haghighian, Hila Peleg, Rirkrit Tiravanija and Jan Verwoert, among
others; Vidokle has experimented with a number of economic and cultural models
ranging from a library to a video rental shop, from a school to an art journal to a
cafeteria.
In projects such as Unitednationsplaza, Martha Rosler Library, e-flux video rental,
Pawnshop, Night School, e-flux journal and New York Conversations, Vidokle has
constructed temporary yet fully functional situations capable of existing both
within and without institutions of Art. Together, these projects constitute a body
of work that re-imagines the poetic and organizational potentialities of concrete
social forms. By converting an exhibition into a school, a panel discussion at an
art fair into a courtroom or an artist's private library into a public reading room,
Vidokle has continuously attempted to question the parameters and conditions around
the discourse, production, and circulation of art, while recognizing this act of
questioning as itself a distinct art practice.
For his exhibition at 'Estates-General' Vidokle will present several new works in
the form of an archive: a scale model of the building which housed
Unitednationsplaza in Berlin—a free year-long school initiated by the artist in 2006
following the cancellation of Manifesta 6 on Cyprus; a video database comprising
nearly 100 lectures, talks and seminars organized by Vidokle throughout the past 3
years in Berlin, Mexico City and New York; New York Conversations, a new feature
film shot at e-flux's Lower East Side storefront during a three day public editorial
session for issue #18 of A Prior magazine in Summer 2008 in which the storefront was
transformed into a temporary free restaurant; a print version of e-flux journal; and
various publications from his diverse projects.
A lecture by Berlin-based critic Jan Verwoert on artistic authority will take place
as part of the exhibition on June 27th at 9:30 PM.
Anton Vidokle was born in Moscow and is based in New York and Berlin.
