This exhibition of paintings and photographs in the Kunstmuseum Wolfsburg is
the first overview to be presented in Germany of the output of this American
artist (b. 1949) who returns time and again in his work to the myths of
American popular culture.
A significant component of the exhibition are his
"re-photographs", for which he re-photographed existing photographs thereby
appropriating for his own purposes the artificially staged reality of magazine
ads.
The first of his rephotographed photographs date back to the late 1970s;
these together with paintings from different periods present a comprehensive
picture of his artistic career.
The exhibition has been organised in collaboration with the Museum für
Gegenwartskunst in Basel and the Kunsthalle Zürich.
