CREMASTER 3
On May 1, the Guggenheim Museum
presents the world premiere of
Matthew Barney's film CREMASTER 3,
the final installment of the
CREMASTER cycle, an epic five-part
film project. CREMASTER 3 (starring
Barney, artist Richard Serra, and
paralympic athlete Aimee Mullins) is
set in 1930s New York. The plot
explores the effects of will on the
development of character through a
mosaic of references including the
Irish mob, Freemasonry, and Celtic
lore. It was filmed at both the
Chrysler Building and the
Guggenheim Museum.
The premiere is a benefit for
contemporary programming at the
Guggenheim and launches the
international tour of Matthew
Barney: The CREMASTER Cycle, an
exhibition devoted to the entire film
cycle and its related sculptures,
photographs, and drawings. The
exhibition comes to the Solomon R.
Guggenheim Museum in February
2003.
