Art is not a mirror, it’s a hammer! is not a straight biographical / educational exhibition, instead the selected artefacts have an intrinsic interest and when viewed as a whole, provide a fuller picture of Grierson’s and McLaren’s life and career.

Born in Deanston in 1898 John Grierson has been described as the father of documentary filmmaking. In 1929 he directed the film Drifters, a stirring account of the British herring fishing industry, which laid the foundations for documentary filmmaking in Britain. In his role as head of the film units at the Empire Marketing Board and the General Post Office in the 1930s Grierson nurtured a generation of British filmmaking talent. In 1939 he moved to Canada where he became the first head of the National Film Board of Canada and is credited with playing an important role in the development of Canada's film industry. He also contributed to the development of Scottish film as a member of the Films of Scotland Committee. In the 1950s and 60s Grierson was a familiar face on Scottish television as the presenter of This Wonderful World, a programme which presented his selection of the best documentary films from around the world.

Norman McLaren was born in Stirling in April 1914. The son of a painter and decorator he was educated at Stirling High Scool and studied art and interior design at the Glasgow School of Art from 1933-36. While there he began making short experimental films. His work came to the attention of John Grierson offered him a job with the GPO film unit in London. McLaren gained valuable filmmaking experience at the GPO and in 1939 when Grierson moved to Canada to set up their National Film Board, he invited McLaren to join him. In Canada Grierson gave McLaren the freedom to experiment. He examined the various ways sound and movement could be presented on film and developed a variety of different techniques of animation. McLaren's genius was recognised worldwide with a string of awards for his work including an Oscar in 1953 for his short film Neighbours. Two parallel exhibition opening on Thursday 30 April 6 – 8pm.
