The extension of the concept of sculpture in a new material technology, which completely changes our notion of material is still new territory. Walde investigates the connection between material and sculpture and, through this, has also evolved a new relationship of sense organs and sense perception using the example of sculpture. Works from the FER, VAF, and Weishaupt collections: the exhibition shows a small art-historical retrospective and overview of Conceptual art, Op Art, Kinetics, and Pop and Abstract Art of the 1960s and 1970s.
Martin Walde
Hallucigenia
Curated by Peter Weibel
For several years, Martin Walde has succeeded with an unmistakable innovative praxis to involve exhibition viewers in his dynamic installation processes. Martin Walde became internationally recognized first and foremost through his participation in Catherine David's "documenta X" (1997). His works advanced the concept of sculpture at the cutting edge of material research. The concept of viewing sculpture as a performance in space has meanwhile asserted itself in numerous works – from Franz Erhard Walther through to Erwin Wurm.
However, the extension of the concept of sculpture in a new material technology, which completely changes our notion of material is still new territory, which, with a few exceptions and although explored for the first time already during the 1960s has been hardly developed further. It is in this sense that Martin Walde investigates the connection between material and sculpture and, through this, has also evolved a new relationship of sense organs and sense perception using the example of sculpture.
At the ZKM, not only is a new version on show of the video installation "Production Limits," as presented at the international biennale of Seville in 2008, but so also is the group of "Hallucigenia-Sculptures": thin-walled blown glass units, filled with different gasses and made to illuminate by high frequency technology. With respect to their form, they are derived from pre-Cambriain invertebrate animals, whose imprints were found in Canada, in 1977. Their discoverer, S. C. Morris called these animals "Hallucigenia." Thus, in Martin Walde's sculptures art, technology, nature and science are combined.

Collectors' Choice II
An exhibition at the ZKM | Museum of Contemporary Art
Curated by Gregor Jansen and Andreas Beitin with the FER, Siegfried Weishaupt, and Volker Feierabend collections
Supplemental to the first part of the exhibition "Collectors' Choice," which is already showing works from the Boros, Grässlin, and Landesbank Baden-Württemberg collections on the third floor of the Museum, beginning in August, presented on the second floor will be works from the FER, VAF, and Weishaupt collections; thus all collections that work in cooperation with the ZKM | Museum of Contemporary Art will be represented with numerous works.
Whereas the focus in the first part of the exhibition is on art that was created in Germany, and art that is dedicated to specific German themes and events from the past and present, the current expansion of the exhibition on the third floor of the museum shows a small art-historical retrospective and overview of, among others, Conceptual art, Op Art, Kinetics, and Pop and Abstract Art of the 1960s and 1970s. Exhibited here, among others, are works by Mark Rothko, On Kawara, Andy Warhol, Hanne Darboven, and Bruno Munari.
Works by Markus Oehlen and Walter Dahn stand exemplarily for works of so-called "wild painting" and finally, the arc is drawn to the present with a series of contemporary works from the three private collections that extends from figurative painting, to conceptual approaches, through to video art, thus demonstrating the complexity of interests of the collectors at the Museum of Contemporary Art. Shown here are, for example, works by Davide La Rocca, Matthieu Mercier, Vinvent Szarek, Isabell Heimerdinger, and Chiara Dynys.
In conjunction with the ten-year anniversary of the ZKM | Museum of Contemporary Art, the entire house will present itself successively over the course of the second half of the year as a museum dedicated exclusively to the cooperating collections.
