Taroop et Glabel

For this new exhibition, the artists' collective Taroop & Glabel will present a most pertinent selection from its image collection, which has been put together by the artists over the years. To everyone's delight.

Set up in conjunction with the regional press, this selection, called "Les belles images de T & G", re uses about forty captioned pictures that have simply been taken from daily newspapers. "Guaranteed without any touch-up or cropping", pictures and captions haven't been modified, nor has their order been reversed; they have merely been enlarged "to ensure greater legibility." These pictures have unquestionably gained their autonomy from the radical spirit of an artistic gesture that simply offers a view. A view but also a source of amusement at this vanity fair, these old illusions and false glories with which, since the dawn of time, one cloaks reality.

Established in the early 1990's, the Taroop & Glabel collective specializes in the amused observation of the surrounding world. Above all, it knows how to pay attention to the new ways in which Man expresses his eternal propensity for self-abuse and abuse of his neighbour: consumer society, leisure society, show society; the reign of advertising, amusement parks, and newscasts. It all comes together here in a burst of laughter, with savage joy, to make the idols sway.

Taroop & Glabel's exhibition presents the opportunity to republish "Aucune photo ne peut rendre la beauté de ce décor" (No photo could render the beauty of this scenery). The title of this artist's book captures the essence of the struggle. The enemy has been clearly identified: foolishness in all its forms. Foolishness in all its appearances, throughout its updated expressions. A title which pierces the bubble of obviousness and self-assurance that have become, now more than ever, the sign of our times.
