Showcase.09
Cambridge Galleries Queen’s Square and Preston
Until October 25, 2009

Showcase.09 is a biennial survey of artists who have been exhibiting professionally for less than 3 years or have recently completed their BFA, MFA or equivalent. Every two years up to 15 emerging artists currently based in Central, Southern or Southwestern Ontario are selected to participate in this important survey of fresh and emerging work by contemporary artists in the early stages of their professional career. This year’s artists will be selected in consultation with Sara Knelman, Curator of Contemporary Art at the Art Gallery of Hamilton. Prior exhibitions have featured work by Adam David Brown, Robyn Cumming, Niall Donaghy, Brendan Fernandes, Steven Laurie, Kristine Moran, Susy Oliveira and Scott Waters.

Showcase.09 will be on display at both the Queen’s Square and Preston gallery locations and is timed to coincide with CAFKA.09: Veracity, this year’s Waterloo Region wide international biennial.

For the third installment of Cambridge Galleries’ biennial focusing on emerging artists, co-curators Sara Knelman and Ivan Jurakic looked at 137 submissions by artists from across Central, Southern and Southwestern Ontario. The final selection features an exciting group of 13 emerging artists, including: Julia Beltrano, Kristin Bjornerud, Fausta Facciponte, Stefanie Fiore, Martin Golland, Lauren Hall, Jean-Paul Kelly, David R. Harper, Andrew MacDonald, David McDougall, Sasha Pierce, Nathalie Quagliotto, and Aleks Woszczyna.

Roula Partheniou
Circular Logic
Cambridge Galleries Queen’s Square
An adjunct project of CAFKA.09: Veracity
Until October 4, 2009

Circular Logic features a new work from the artist's Handmade Readymade project. This ongoing series of trompe l'oeil paintings of books function as text works, found poetry and discrete art objects. Borrowing the same glass cubes that the Cambridge Libraries use to showcase new book releases, Partheniou repurposes this display system to create a large modular cube to house a self-curated selection of new book paintings. The closed system of the cube neatly frames the artist’s formal and conceptual concerns as she engages in a game of referral and deflection. While the counterfeit canvases question the authority that the book covers convey, the inability to handle or ‘borrow’ any of the books neatly thwarts our expectations.

Roula Partheniou is an artist living and working in Toronto, Canada. Her work is marked by a concern for marriage of material and form and is drawn together by a strong sense of both logic and play. Using familiar objects as a starting point, she plays simple games using an objects' own inherent rules and physical properties to transform them, often employing processes such as repetition, permutation, multiplication and duplication. Partheniou graduated from the University of Guelph with a Bachelor of Fine Arts and is represented by MKG127 in Toronto. Website: www.roulapartheniou.com

The Art of Wallpaper
Until October 18, 2009
Cambridge Galleries Design at Riverside

Wallpaper emerges from the background to the forefront of new design.

The Art of Wallpaper celebrates the art behind the popular, yet often maligned decorative device, and its’ recent revival. From early 20th century hand painted samples by Europe’s top studios, The Art of Wallpaper fast forwards to today’s bespoke, limited edition, and designer production lines that serve as a unique creative outlet for artists and designers from around the world.

The contemporary designs were selected to challenge the perception of wallpaper as a benign background by emphasizing the current exploration of new materials and subject matter, and to convey the impact of digital technology on wallpaper design and production.

Both limited production and mass produced designs will be featured. A small format catalogue will accompany the exhibition.

All hand painted historical samples courtesy of the private collection of Hugh Thompson, Cambridge, Ontario.
