Teen Studio Art Program
May 11 through September 29, 2002
Thanks to a generous grant from the James Irvine Foundation, the Teen Art Programs (TAP) at SJMA are entering their second year of activity.
These studio programs take place outside of school hours and are meant to encourage youth to exercise leadership skills while learning more about the visual arts.
In November 2001, the Museum opened its first teen art exhibition, Snap! Photography from SJMA's Teen Arts Program, which included work from a TAP project that introduced participants to both digital and black-and-white photography.
A successful first endeavor, the exhibition was also curated and organized entirely by members of the Museums' Teen Art Council (TAC) working with various staff from the curatorial and education departments.
TAC is a diverse group of San Jose area teens whose purpose is to provide young people with access to the Museum and the visual arts.
Building on the success of Snap!, the upcoming TAP exhibition will follow a similar formula.
The work in the exhibition will be drawn from the various TAP studio arts programs and consist of work that explores a variety of mediums.
The Teen Art Council will once again work with Museum staff conceptualizing and organizing the show.
In addition, TAC will participate in a collaborative workshop with an artist selected by the group.
