A collection of documentaries about artworks recently created using the latest 21st Century technologies: ALife, robotics, bio and genetic engineering, etc. Living or lifelike matter serves as an art medium for some of the resulting works. The combination of properties of a living organism and of a technologically reproduced artefact provides a method. This collection is a first comprehensive overview of the current stage of contemporary techno-biological art. It provides a panorama of artistic strategies of granting and withdrawing the gift of authenticity which open new possibilities for creative production and cultural commentary.

The National Centre for Contemporary Arts (Kaliningrad Branch, Russia) together with LABORATORIA Art&Science Spac presents a collection of documentaries about artworks recently created using the latest 21st Century technologies: ALife, robotics, bio and genetic engineering, etc. Living or lifelike matter serves as an art medium for some of the resulting works. The combination of properties of a living organism and of a technologically reproduced artefact provides a method.
Art that is created under these new conditions of postbiology – under the conditions of an artificially fashioned lifespan – cannot help but take this artificiality as its explicit theme. In this way, one is again confronted with the question of the relationship between art and life – in a completely new context, defined by biological and abiological nature’s production.
This collection is a first comprehensive overview of the current stage of contemporary techno-biological art. It provides a panorama of artistic strategies of granting and withdrawing the gift of authenticity which open new possibilities for creative production and cultural commentary. In 2009 the “Evolution Haute Couture” project won the Russian National Award for Contemporary Arts “Innovation”.
Documentation: “Evolution Haute Couture: Art and Science in the Post-Biological Age”. Edited by Dmitry Bulatov. With a foreword by Dmitry Bulatov and essays by Roy Ascott, Dmitry Bulatov. Russian-English edition, and extensive glossary, color and black-and-white illustrations, 192 pages, catalogue + 2 DVD-ROM, KB NCCA, Kaliningrad, 2009. Supported by The Ministry of Culture of the Russian Federation, The Ford Foundation (The Moscow Office, Russia), The Dynasty Foundation (Moscow), Karpov Institute of Physical Chemistry (Moscow)
