Art is traditionally perceived as something intact and indivisible. However, today a “piece” of art can become more than a useless patch, but a self-consistent ideology. This concept is embodied in the “Piece of Art” project, a global performance that involves the public. Five well-known Russian artists, whose names are not publicized due to conceptual reasons, have created their works that were later divided into parts. Now it’s time for spectators to recreate them, just like archaeologists who reconstruct occupation layers out of infinitesimal fragments.
Guests of the vernissage will receive real fragments of artworks as invitations – that’s why everyone’s assistance is absolutely necessary to obtain the whole picture. The viewer is responsible for the oeuvre’s fate; he is initiated in the artistic process. So, another thing that is crucial to this project is documentation of all the stages, from creation and “splitting” of the object to its full recovery.
The intrigue consists in the fact that the acting spectator doesn’t know until the very last moment, the work by which artist came to his hands. Maybe, one can guess some names in the course of the exhibition.
