Spheres 2009

Galleria Continua / Le Moulin, Boissy-le-Chatel

For the second edition, the Spheres project re-involves the participation of several contemporary art galleries of international dimension prompted by one desire: to join their diverse forces and energies to develop a shared exhibition - a new kind of exhibition experience - with no submission to any restricting theme. The Galleries will present artists from the five continents, whose works will be installed in and will relate to various parts of the exceptional complex. In doing so, they will engage with the rich history of the site. Once again the Sphères project reunites several contemporary art galleries with an international dimension, driven by one desire: to unite their diverse energies around a new, common exhibition experience, without being tied to a restrictive theme. The galleries each present artists from the five continents, whose works of art take over the diverse exhibition space at Le Moulin, an unusual setting with an interesting history.

Proof that it is possible to be freed from presuppositions about so-called competition between contemporary art galleries, this project holds a dynamic position in the heart of the professional domain of art and its market: an initiative changing the correlation from a barrier, into an outstanding asset for opening the path to new and ambitious projects, building on the diversity of opinions and the richness of subjectivity.

The artwork gathered at Le Moulin reflects the support and development maintained by the galleries, which shows here their strength of proposition, investment and their continued support for the artists, in order to create new ways of thinking and new challenges. Sphères therefore represents the strength of acting together in order to create a combined force of energy and thus multiply the critical perspectives.

Galleria Continua unveiled this unusual site for contemporary creation in the Paris region in October 2007. Several times a year Le Moulin hosts, according to the seasons, projects and the exhibition of large-scale works by artists from the five continents.

The renovated site, a former factory of more than 10,000 m2, embraces its new artistic life, already with more than 15,000 visitors over only two years of activity. A new cultural breath of fresh air has been blown into the area and the local public is showing great interest, Parisians and the international public alike. The commercial site combines the concerns of the philanthropic public as well as those of a private company.

Long-term projects

Certain pieces were created and produced especially for Le Moulin and are at times exhibited semi-permanently. Galleria Continua likes to maintain physical and visual continuity between its past, present and future exhibitions. For example, ‘long-term projects’ by Daniel Buren, Chen Zhen, Leandro Erlich, Yona Friedman, Kendell Geers, Michelangelo Pistoletto, Shen Yuan and Pascale Marthine Tayou reflect previous exhibitions. Likewise, certain pieces are not part of thematic or monographic exhibitions and are exhibited as a ‘special viewing’. These are artworks are normally in transit, on loan or exceptionally in storage at Le Moulin.

Long-term projects: Daniel Buren, Chen Zhen, Loris Cecchini, Leandro Erlich, Yona Friedman, Kendell Geers, Subodh Gupta, Michelangelo Pistoletto, Pascale Marthine Tayou, Shen Yuan.
