Angela de la Cruz, Matthew Higgs, Elizabeth Price
plus an outside project by Bob & Roberta Smith
3 Rooms is an exhibition of works by three artists Angela
de la Cruz, Matthew Higgs and Elizabeth Price. Each
artist has been given a room to realise a piece or project.
Angela de la Cruz - manipulates and breaks her stretchers
making works that have a physical and human quality. Her
paintings are survivors of everyday life and have titles
such as Ashamed, Knackered, and Misery. Her work has
a refreshing irreverance and humour towards the hallowed
tradition of painting. Angela de la Cruz recently showed at
Galerie Krinzinger, Vienna and John Weber Gallery, New
York. Matthew Higgs - work is based around books and
text. He is best known for his bookpage series where he
uses the title pages of various books detached from their
original contexts such as Museum Piece, and Art Aint All
Paint. He recently had a one person show at Murray Guy,
New York. He is the publisher of Imprint 93 - an ongoing
series of artists editions that last year celebrated the
publication of its 50th project and is also a curator and has
co-curated the current British Art Show 5 and a
forthcoming show at the Whitechapel Art Gallery.
Elizabeth Price - work is arrived at by somekind of
process or action. Boulder for instance is a ball of brown
tape started in 1997 which she has since added to
regularily and at present measures 229cm in
circumference. The piece is an ongoing work that has
been shown a number of times in different sizes. She also
recently organised Dot a project which included the
participation of 40 artists and ran for one year. The
exhibition of the project Snowballing is currently at Arthur
R. Rose, London and will then travel to the Henry Moore
Foundation.
As part of this exhibition Bob & Roberta Smith will also
make a work for the outside of the building. Bob &
Roberta Smith will be showing at Statements Art31 Basel
in June and NEW BRITISH ART 2000 at the Tate Gallery
in July.
