comunicato stampa

As part of Barcelonas "Primavera Fotogràfica 2002" the Joan Miró Foundation will be organising an exhibition of photographs by Joaquim Gomis (Barcelona, 1902-1991), a friend and collaborator of Joan Miró, Josep Lluís Sert and Joan Prats and the first president of the Foundations Board of Trustees.

The show, selected by Juan Naranjo, contains around 150 photographs arranged in six sections: The modern view, The poetry of objects, "Photoscops", Form - a road to abstraction, Tormented beauty and The body. His idea is to illustrate some of the unknown aspects of Gomis output, such as his photographs of nudes, and at the same time offer a new interpretation of his work by showing a large amount of unpublished material.

Joaquim Gomis was one of the first creative artists in Spain to use a modern language in his photographs, both in the selection of subjects (urban life, technology, architecture and advertising) and in his treatment of them (birds eye and worms eye views, fragmentation and exploration of form). He developed this personal language through his choice of shots and frames and his treatment of light, which gave a poetic air to his photographs.

Together with Joan Prats he created "photoscops", a compilation of photographs on the same subject arranged sequentially, which he published in a series of books from the forties to the sixties. It was from these publications and from projections and exhibitions that his work became known to the public, for until then he had taken photographs for his own purposes and they had not been seen outside his circle of friends.

Gomis also played a fundamental role in promoting modern art as a result of his role in setting up ADLAN (Amics de lArt Nou) and the Club 49. In addition, as a consequence of his links with Barcelona, he founded and was the first president of the Associació dAmics de Gaudí and took part in the creation of the Joan Miró Foundation.

The exhibition aims to make known to a wider public the work of Joaquim Gomis a man of any talents who was a collector, businessman, patron of the arts and one of the most outstanding Spanish photographers of the twentieth century.
