From the Outside Looking In

On December 1-st the ArtAids Foundation will present 'On the Outside Looking In' in several venues throughout Barcelona. This exhibition, featuring works by artists from Barcelona and those with a special link to the city, aims to raise awareness and create a greater understanding of people living with HIV and to emphasise the need for prevention.

Curator Miquel Bardagil has linked the "outside" in the exhibition's title to the idea of the outdoors. This concept is the starting point for the exhibition, providing us with an insight into the experience of HIV-positive people. It underlies the work of the artists, who employ a wide range of disciplines including installations, photography, drawing, painting and video.

Simultaneously, Barcelona's Casa Àsia will host 'More to Love', an exhibition of works by twenty Thai and European artists that was presented by ArtAids in Bangkok and Chiang Mai (Thailand) in 2008.

To complement 'On the Outside Looking In', ArtAids is organising educational workshops at Casa Elizalde and an educational project in the neighbourhood of La Mina.

After its Barcelona season, 'On the Outside Looking In' will be presented in Oviedo (Banco Herrero Head Office) from September through November 2010. From December 2010 through February 2011, the exhibition will be shown at Valencia's MuVIM.

ArtAids was founded in Holland in 2006 by writer and collector Han Nefkens, who has been living with HIV since 1987. It was set up to fight the stigma surrounding HIV/AIDS by commissioning works by acclaimed international artists in order to explore the illness, help increase public awareness and improve society's attitude towards HIV-positive persons.

ArtAids has also created projects that provide medical assistance to those who would not otherwise receive it, and finances HIV research in Spain and Thailand.

Since its inception, ArtAids has worked in Holland, Belgium, France, Switzerland and Thailand. In 2010, ArtAids will be present at Dak'Art, the Biennial of Contemporary African Art in Senegal.

`On the Outside Looking In’, a group exhibition featuring twenty artists from Barcelona, or with a very special connection to the city, in nine venues around Barcelona. The event will take place at 7.30pm on Tuesday December 1st, at Nivell Zero-Fundació Suñol. A performance by Alicia Framis, ‘Forbidden Places (Framis for Men)’ will officially open.

A project organised by ArtAids with the participation of twenty artists from Barcelona or with a special link to the city. ‘On The Outside Looking In’ is driven by a desire to increase awareness of the need for prevention and to reflect on the feelings of people living with HIV. The curator of the exhibition, Miquel Bardagil, sees it as the culmination of a project that began in 2008 and encompasses a very wide range of activities, some in collaboration with other institutions. In general, most of the artists participating in the project had not previously worked with the subject of Aids in any significant way, and thus the exhibition avoids predictable approaches and opens up new ways of seeing.

The idea of the exterior – the “outside” in the exhibition’s title– is linked to that of being outdoors. This concept is the starting point for the exhibition, allowing us an insight into the experience of HIV-positive people, and also structures the exhibition and the work of the artists. It is a starting point – even if it leads us elsewhere in the end.

This particular vision from the outside in, from several generations of artists and from different disciplines such as installation, photography, painting and video, is the concept that underlies the works presented by the artists. Each artist was given production budget and an artist’s fee, and will then transfer ownership of the work to ArtAids. Thus, the artists are involved on two fronts: by transferring ownership of the work, and by making an AIDS-related work.

‘On The Outside Looking In’ is the first project carried out by the ArtAids Foundation in Barcelona, the city where its local and international activities will be developed from now on. After its Barcelona season, ‘On The Outside Looking In’ will be presented in Oviedo (Banco Herrero Head Office) from September to November, 2010, and then at MuVM in Valencia from December 16th to February 27th, 2011.
