The creations of the Canadian artist Ken Lum invariably find themselves on the
borderline of sign and language. Lum applies a modern kind of iconography,
which comprises both subjects and typography; migration and identity are
recurrent themes. In one series, produced in the late eighties and early nineties,
portraits of one or several persons in certain situations are confronted with their
titles. The programmatic nature of these titles is made obvious by their bold
typography and garish background colors.
In the Shopkeeper Series, store signs of, for example, a small motel, a fast-food
restaurant or a hairdresser’s with their typical inscriptions are combined,
seemingly casually, with subtitles scrambled together from pin letters. The
subtitles introduce a socio-political dimension as they shed light on the
situations of the owners and customers of these fictional -yet typical- stores.
Ken Lum is participating in this year’s Documenta 11 in Kassel with a large
work created especially for the exhibition.
