Orchardson juxtaposes two elements in his work: carefully painted images
inspired by or taken directly from classic science fiction films like
Stanley Kubrick's 2001: A Space Odyssey; and sculptural forms that echo
the streamlined aesthetic of design in the 1960's/1970's. The work
reflects an interest in the way we constantly re-imagine the future and
how we react to our changing relationships with technology, nature and
faith.
News From Nowhere consists of a series of new works conceived as a
large-scale installation where each piece works with the others on
various levels, with the larger pieces functioning as architectural
interventions. The exhibition takes its title from a story written by
William Morris in 1890 which depicts a utopian world set in the future
where people have reverted to life without machines. Disillusion with
the progress of the industrial revolution leads them to choose a world
devoid of technological advances.
'Orchardson is interested in exploring the expectations, aspirations and
fears that are projected onto what we do not and cannot ever really
know.' Exhibition guide 'Beyond', DCA, Dundee, 2001
'I can remember when people throughout the world were intensely
interested in the future, and convinced that it would change their lives
for the better. In the years after the Second World War the future was
the air that everyone breathed....confident that we could shape our
world in any way we wished, dream any dream and see it come to life.
For the first time the future was a better key to the present than was
the past.' JG Ballard, intorduction to 'Myths of the near future', 1982
Robert Orchardson was born in 1976 and is based in Dundee. This is his
first solo exhibition since graduating from Duncan of Jordanstone,
Dundee in 1998. Previous exhibitions include 'Beyond', Dundee
Contemporary Arts, 2001 and 'Tales of Ordinary Madness', Patriothall,
Edinburgh, 1999. In the past two years Orchardson has undertaken a
number of public commissions including a series of large scale
light-boxes at Dundee City Airport, 2000.
