Cynthia Broan Gallery is pleased to announce I-BEAM, a ten-person exhibition of painting and sculpture.
There are two primary elements that unite the work in this exhibition. The first is a formal issue. It is a strong presence of a structural component not unlike
the I-beams that create the internal structures of buildings. The second is an open-ended handling of the meaning, generally through imagery that toys with
representation and reflects the unspecifiable nature of thinking. The I-beam, in this case, can be seen as a metaphor for the fixed stability desired from
something slippery and perpetually elusive.
In one sense, this exhibition is a vehicle for examining meanings inherent in the impulse toward structure. These meanings frequently center around the desire
to order and control our world (or to address a breakdown in order or lack of control). This predilection for ordering in art can be witnessed at least as far back
as the advent of linear perspective in the renaissance and, at its zenith, with the grid of twentieth century abstraction. This impulse is still in frequent
evidence today, which should indicate its importance as an archetypal element in visual art and the array of implications that resonate from it.
Opening Reception: Thursday, June 20, 6-9pm
