Introducing Korean-America artist Minaliza1000

Reception for the artist: Thursday, 20 June, 6 - 8 PM

Gallery Summer Hours: Tuesday - Friday, 12-5pm

Lance Fung Gallery is pleased to present the solo exhibition of the emerging artist MINALIZA1000. In the site-specific string installation, GROUNDLESS, the artist has created a curved matrix that is suspended within the space of the gallery. The piece is an interactive interface in which video and sound components are triggered by the visitor's movement in and around the artwork.

GROUNDLESS is about the feeling of groundlessness as we move from a sensorial understanding of the world to an intellectual model of a particle-based Universe. Drawing from the Super String Theory in physics, the artist di srupts the surface of the gallery with a scintillating elastic string structure. The pristine white space of the gallery takes on a cosmic dimension, presenting a new kind of Universe in a box.

This recent work is part of a series of installations in which the artist has alluded to theoretical schemas. In each installation, the theoretical schema is represented by the physical elements of the piece and undermined by its virtual elements. In a past work, titled DESIRING INFINITY, a series of strings converged on a digital vanishing point which alternately existed, moved, and disappeared. Other works have dealt with theories covering the Fibonacci's Golden Section, Alberti's Linear Perspective, and the Cartesian Grid. The GROUNDLESS installation is sponsored and owned by SSAMZIE CO., LTD.

MINALIZA1000, who trained as a painter under Grace Hartigan and did her first Masters degree at the Maryland Institute College of Art, recently completed her second Masters in Imaging and Digital Arts at the University of Maryland. She has been a recipient of Honorariums from the Contemporary Museum and the Mayor's Advisory Committee on Art and Culture of Baltimore, Maryland. Her exhibitions include showing at the Arlington Arts Center in VA, Korean Culture and Arts Foundation Gallery in Seoul, as well as video screening at Film Forum, LA. As a promoter of science-based art, she organized a group show and arts event, SCI-ART: EXTENSIONS OF BEING, at the Maryland Art Place, MD. She is currently teaching Electronic Media and Culture at the Maryland Institute College of Art.

The Lance Fung Gallery is in its fifth exhibition season after creating an internationally recognized program. The owner, Lance Fung has been involved in the New York Art World for over a decade with his most important position being the director of the Holly Solomon Gallery for six years from 1989 - 1996. Other established artists have joined his unique gallery focusing on installation and the avant-garde like Shigeko Kubota, Nicolas Africano, and Robert Morris. In addition to the established artists, the Lance Fung Gallery has maintained a strong presence in introducing and representing emerging and mid-career artists.
