Group show
In a magnanimously planned show that, with around 3500 square meters, will almost take over the entire area of the collection and exhibition space of the groundbreaking architecture designed by Axel Schultes, Kunstmuseum Bonn (as the highlight of the year 2010) will put on the exhibit DER WESTEN LEUCHTET, a site assessment of the art landscape in the Rhineland. The exhibition will, on the one hand, introduce the major artists of the older generation (from Richter to Gursky), each with new works, and link these, on the other, to central works of young up-and-coming art for a survey of over 30 positions.
Selecting who among the generation of older artists and which among their new works was a task for the curatorial team of Kunstmuseum Bonn (Volker Adolphs, Stephan Berg, Stefan Gronert, Irene Kleinschmidt-Altpeter, Sabina Leßmann and Christoph Schreier). The choice of new blood, in turn, was undertaken by the ‘internationally arrived’ artists themselves. Dividing the curatorial responsibility between artists and art-historians was understood as setting a conscious sign in opposition to the chimera of the omnipotent curator and as recognition of the priority achievements of the artists.
Represented in the show will be: Bernd & Hilla Becher, Joseph Beuys, Anna and Bernhard Johannes Blume, Tony Cragg, Isa Genzken, Andreas Gursky, Georg Herold, Jürgen Klauke, Imi Knoebel, Marcel Odenbach, Albert Oehlen, Blinky Palermo, Sigmar Polke, Gerhard Richter, Ulrich Rückriem, Thomas Schütte, Katharina Sieverding, Rosemarie Trockel, Timm Ulrichs. From the younger generation of artists there will be works by Thomas Arnolds, Martina Debus, Chris Durham, Claudia Fährenkemper, Natascha Sadr Haghighian, David Hahlbrock, Benjamin Houlihan, Bernd Kastner, Christian Keinstar, Erinna König, Gereon Krebber , Ursula Neugebauer and Michail Pirgelis. The around 350-page catalogue will contain contributions written by Stephan Berg, Barbara Engelmann, Jürgen Harten and Günter Herzog, and others.
