Out of the dark into the air.
Degen approaches painting with a non-hierarchical eye, treating pattern, figuration, text and color with equal emphasis and importance. Within the paintings themselves, despite an overall subject, none of these elements take precedence over the other.
For the exhibition Degen has produced new works that, similar to the above, break down the human condition into basic components, in this case: endeavour, sustenance, companionship and loneliness. Taking human existence as basic, made up of needs and expectations, Degen creates a world around it that subtly illustrates the underlying luminosity and warmth of humanity.
