Glass Curtain Gallery, Chicago

Fair Use: Information Piracy and Creative Commons in Contemporary Art and Design

Fair Use is a multimedia exhibition at Columbia College Chicago's Glass Curtain Gallery that sets out to foster critical discussion about intellectual property rights. The exhibition looks at how contemporary artists and designers challenge proprietary cultural material through its appropriation, reconfiguration and redistribution.

The recent strategies of open-source and "copyleft" licensing serve to encourage collaboration and innovation through the free sharing of information. Together these two paradigms form a critique of the conventional modes of distribution and ownership to imagine a more fluid and inclusive economy of cultural meanings.

Participating artists include: Guy Ben-Ner, Bea Correa, Line Langballe and Christina Okai Mejborn of Totem Collective, Sze Lin Pang, Pratchaya Phintong, Seth Price, Kay Rosen, Salter/Snowden and Siebren Versteeg.

This exhibition is curated by Brandon Alvendia.

Co-sponsored by the Interactive Arts & Media Department as part of their Spring Lecture Series. Free and open to the public.

Siebren Versteeg is a multimedia artist who, in addition to writing his own software code, co-opts online media and commercial databases to create hi-tech works that critique the very sources he usurps. Versteeg will be discussing his ideas and work in this lecture. Versteeg's piece, New York Windows, is included in the Fair Use exhibition.

Access Excess, Beyond the Stage

Access/Excess explores the visual environment surrounding a music concert. While the focus of the event, the musicians and music, is ephemeral, a plethora of lasting visual elements are involved in creating the experience. Designers, photographers and artists are all key in creating and documenting the event from the graphics on the merchandise to the advertising posters. Giving access to the excess, the visual elements that often fade into the background are now the focus.

The 17th Annual Hokin Honors Exhibition features students of outstanding artistic achievement in photography, fashion, graphic design, film and video and all fine art media. The exhibit is juried by local arts professionals. All participating artists are nominated by faculty and staff members of Columbia College Chicago.
The Department of Exhibition and Performance Spaces, a division of Student Life is entirely funded by student activity fees. Image: Lipid Lush, was created for the 16th Annual Hokin Honors Exhibition by honorable mention award winner Jackie Capozzoli. Lipid Lush, a site-specific acrylic wall painting is described by Jackie as "a playful depiction of lipids, or fat cells. The colorful clusters of cells bubble and divide, stretching and morphing beyond the space they inhabit."
