comunicato stampa

Greg Palmer

This major solo exhibition of Portsmouth based painter Greg Palmer represents over two years work, produced since the artist relocated from London in 2000.

Synthetic Truths reflects a world of domesticity and natural history, where evolving landscapes and life cycles are played out against a backdrop of disposable plastic. Bear shaped meat slices, insects, birds, snowflakes from freezer labels, plastic cups and text are all employed in these paintings, presenting a view of the world that is at once joyful and menacing. The responsibility of parenthood and watching his young children start to look at and understand the world has greatly informed this work.

These are highly ordered and constructed paintings with thickened acrylic paint squeegied onto the canvas. The flat amplified plastic nature this method offers, results in a clarity of image and reflects a stylised 'easy wipe' version of reality.

Born in Lancashire, Greg Palmer studied at Portsmouth Polytechnic and Wimbledon School of Art. He now teaches on the fine art degree programmes of the University of Portsmouth and Southampton Institute.

Aspex Gallery runs a programme of FREE gallery talks in association with its exhibition programme. These talks are usually conducted by the exhibiting artist or curator and everyone is welcome to attend.
