Part III-MUSIC
Conceived by Michael Counts

At Galapagos, Williamsburg
Michael Counts and GAle GAtes et al. present the third part of The
World: An Odyssey in Six or More Parts, a series of music performances.
The World.continues Counts' ongoing exploration of the idea of the
"journey" in theatre and art, and furthers his experimentation in new
ways to experience performance. While conceived by Counts, The
World.will incorporate the creation of dozens of writers, composers, and
other artists. These diverse voices will combine to render a world made
of many worlds that audiences will be able to explore as they chart
their own odyssey through this multi-faceted work.
Part I of The World: An Odyssey in Six of More Parts in October 2002,
began with a series of eight miniature installations created by Counts.
With an unpredictable cast of characters set in complex landscapes,
these installations establish mysterious moments with relationships and
themes that beg to be investigated. To that end, Counts invited a
handful of writers and musicians to view the installations and come up
with their own interpretations of what they saw. Counts' intention is
to make a work about the journey, which is also a multi-part journey in
itself.
Part II will continued this process with cast readings of the writers'
interpretations of the installations. The writers included, Sibyl
Kempson, Ruth Margraff, Ian McCulloch, Jesse McKinley, Kevin Oakes,
Robert Simonson, & Anthony Tedesco. These readings lay the foundation
for the next stage, where Counts will collaborate with the writers with
the ultimate goal of a full-fledged performance installation.
In Part III, the musical element of The World: An Odyssey in Six or More
Parts is a series of concerts presenting the contributions of composers,
Djs, and bands. This work will also be folded into the ongoing
collaborative process.
The first of these nights is a night of DJs spinning at Galapagos on
Wednesday, March 26 from 8:30pm. Four of New York City's most talented
and eclectic turntable collage artists will bring together their diverse
music to reveal their interpretations of The World. DJ Mutamassik,
fflood, DJ North Guinea Hills, and DJ Jimmy Tones curated by Kid
Kameleon. The night will span a range of moods and sounds, from dark and
brooding to sublime and ridiculous. The music will be interwoven with a
multiscreen visual feast of images from The World models, creating a
sensory explosion within the Galapagos space.
In opening the stages of the production to the audience and by allowing
them to participate in the journey in their own fashion and to make of
it what they will, Michael Counts casts the audience in the role of
Odysseus. With The World: An Odyssey in Six of More Parts, Counts again
deconstructs the notion of artistic creation and the role of an
audience, offering them as much freedom, and responsibility as they are
willing to assume.
Michael Counts and GAle GAtes et al. have been stirring up New York's
cultural waters since 1995. The World: An Odyssey in Six or More Parts
returns to the themes of GAle GAtes et al.'s first major New York
production, Wine-Blue-Open-Water which chronicled the adventures of
Odysseus and Telemachus.
