The End of Civilisation. A grand piano burns in this epic film by Turner Prize-winning Scottish artist
The End of Civilisation. A grand piano burns in this epic film by Turner Prize-winning Scottish artist Douglas Gordon. In the ancient tradition of lighting a beacon in the borders, a burning beacon will be hidden deep within the Cumbrian landscape on a site overlooking the 'barbarian border' between England and Scotland. But this is no ordinary beacon, as Gordon is destroying one of the western world's great icons to serve as a warning and a celebration. The film will be shown at the iconic Tyne Theatre, built on the site of a stretch of Hadrian's Wall in Newcastle city centre. The End of Civilisation is a Great North Run Culture and Locus+ True Spirit co-commission.
